Transfer Update #4 – 31st May

The latest news from the Championship is that Queens Park Rangers have signed highly rated Swindon midfield duo Massimo Luongo and Ben Gladwin. Luongo won this year’s Asian Cup with Australia and also contributed heavily to The Robins’ promotion push with 6 goals and 8 assists this season. Gladwin, a former Tottenham trainee, was playing for Non-League Marlow just two years ago, but will now help The Hoops to bounce back to the Premier League at the first time of asking.

With Preston competing in the second tier for the first time since 2011, manager Simon Grayson was obviously keen to shift as much dead wood as possible with four players heading for the exit door. Defenders Scott Wiseman and Jack King have both left to join Scunthorpe United, with experienced centre-back David Buchanan dropping to League Two to reunite with former boss Chris Wilder at Northampton Town. Wiseman, who made 34 league appearances for the Lilywhites, will join King at the League One side, who signed a two year deal with the Irons. Buchanan, who featured 88 times for Preston, was kept out of the starting eleven by the impressive Scott Laird last campaign and has joined The Cobblers on a two year deal. He has previously worked under Wilder at Bury and will hope to continue this partnership to gain promotion to the third tier. The final player to bid farewell is winger Lee Holmes, who has signed for Devon club Exeter City. The former Derby man had a loan spell at St James’ Park earlier on this season and will hope to add style and flair to The Grecian’s style of play.

It was one in and one out at League Two Accrington Stanley as winger Kal Naismith joined ex-Premier League side Portsmouth, while defender Matty Pearson arrived from FC Halifax. One of the shining lights of last season, Naismith scored 14 goals in 73 games during his time at the Crown Ground, and he was full of praise for his former teammates and staff before his departure.  Pearson is definitely not an attacking replacement, although he will hope to close the floodgates at the other end of the field. The 21-year old joins on a one year contract and will add stability to the leakiest defence in the fourth tier next season.

In other transfer news, Joe Walsh has joined newly-promoted Milton Keynes Dons from Crawley Town after spending time on loan at Karl Robinson’s side. Teddy Sheringham has made his first signing as Stevenage boss with defender Mark Hughes agreeing a deal to link up with the former England striker when his contract runs out at current club Morecambe.
