The 8th June was by far the busiest day so far In this summers transfer window, in total 12 signings were made in an action packed day.
Derby County kicked the day off with the marquee signing of Darren Bent on a two-year-deal, subject to him passing a medical. The former Spurs striker scored 12 goals in 17 appearances on loan at ‘The Rams’ earlier on in the season and the move could be huge for new manager Paul Clement as he looks to do what Steve McLaren couldn’t do and get Derby promoted to the Premier League. Clement is certainly not messing around, he made his second signing of the day by bringing in 26-year-old Alex Pearce from Reading. Pearce had been with ‘The Royals’ since 2006 and made nearly 200 appearances for his boyhood club. He joins on a three-year-deal.
In other Championship news, Jermaine Beckford has made his season long-loan move to Preston North End a permanent deal from Bolton. He netted 18 times in 31 games for the club including a goal in the play-off semi final against Chesterfield. His second tier experience with Leicester, Huddersfield and Leeds, will assure Simon Grayson that his star man will continue to score goals next season.
Former Birmingham goalkeeper Colin Doyle has completed his move to relegated Blackpool on a two-year-contract. The Irishman played just 31 times for ‘The Blues’ but made appearances in the 2011/12 Europa League. He replaces the on loan Joe Lewis who has subsequently returned to parent club Cardiff.
Rochdale have won the race to sign highly rated Lewis Alessandra from Plymouth Argyle. The dynamic forward started his career in the ‘Dale’ school of excellence but failed to make an impression in the first team at such a young age. Now 26 and brimming with confidence he will hope that what he has learnt in the lower leagues with Morecambe and Plymouth can be transferred to League One level. He joins on a two-year-deal.
In League Two, Morecambe have showed their intent by making a triple singing. Peter Murphy, Aaron Wildig and Adam Dugdale have all committed their futures to ‘The Shrimps’. Defender Murphy joins from Wycombe where he reached last seasons play-off final. Winger Wildig similarly to Murphy joins on a two-year-deal and will hope to add some firepower at the other end of the field. he finished last season on loan at Morecambe scoring 1 goal in 9 appearances. Finally, Adam Dugdale joins from relegated Tranmere Rovers on a one-year-deal with an option of a second. The bruising centre-back made hard work of last season, but will hope to resurrect his career that started with 5 successful years at Crewe.
The final two transfers of the day were also in League Two. Dominant defender Lee Collins joined Mansfield from Northampton Town after being released by ‘The Cobblers’. Hartlepool have added defender Harry Worley to the mix, he started his career at Chelsea but has since plummeted down the league with his last club being Stevenage, where he played just three games for the club.
