Scottish Midfielder Shaun Maloney is set to return to the Football League with Hull City after one season in the MLS with Chicago Fire.
With Tom Huddlestone holding his own future there is no telling where the former Spurs man will end up by September the 1st, and should he decide to depart Maloney will slot into his midfield spot. The 32-year-old has previous experience in England’s second tier with Wigan Athletic and has been capped 40 times by his country. The youthful exuberance that is already flowing through the Tigers midfield could be settled by the experienced midfielder.
With the deal imminent Bruce has already made comments about his new signing in the making. He told the Daily Mail, “Shaun is close to joining. He’s got that bit of quality on the ball, he’s played at the highest level and he will give us that little bit of something extra”. He certainly has a point, the Scot claimed 30 assists and netted 28 times in two separate spells at Celtic Park. Whilst swinging in the corner that resulted in Ben Watson’s infamous last gasp header in the FA Cup final, was one of his finest moments playing south of the border.
The next 48 hours should see the deal tied up and if Bruce can keep the attacking midfielder fit he could be the perfect man to pull the strings from midfield and you never know, maybe even steer the Tigers back to the top flight.
