Gillingham went top of League One after Coventry slipped up away at Walsall, destroying their 100% record. No third tier side has maximum points from the opening 4 matches but just two points separates top from 6th placed Swindon Town.
Bradley Dack scored the goals to lift the Gills to the summit of the league while the Sky Blues were 2-0 down before the hour mark. Norwich loanee Jacob Murphy halved the advantage with a spectacular strike from outside the area, but the Saddlers held on to overtake their West Midlands rivals.
Arguably the game of the day came at Gresty Road where the points were shared in a spectacular 3-3 draw with Bury. The Shakers replied to Adam King’s and Ryan Colclough’s goals two make 2-2 at the break. Danny Rose gave them the lead midway through the second half but Brad Inman rescued a point with 10 minutes remaining.
Blackpool remained rock bottom of the league after being defeated by Sheffield United who have now won three games on the spin thanks to second half goals from Billy Sharp and Marc McNulty. Southend, Colchester and Bradford also remain in the drop zone after failing to pick up first wins of the season. Bradford put in the best of these performances with a creditable away draw at Oakwell. Meanwhile the U’s shipped another 4 goals away to Fleetwood again rasing questions of whether the minimal additions that have been made over the summer are enough to escape relegation.
Burton have been the most impressive of the promoted sides in the opening weeks and are now sitting pretty in the play offs after a 2-1 victory of Peterborough. The defeat was made even more disappointing for Dave Robertson’s men after Gaby Zakuani was dismissed for a dangerous lunge.
As it happens just two other sides picked up three points, Port Vale and Swindon Town being these teams. Sam Foley had a mixed day for Vale after missing a penalty on 11 minutes but redeeming himself not long later. Uche Ikpeazu and Byron Moore would add further goals to take all three points home. The Robins put in a less emphatic display, Fabien Robert grabbing the only goal.
Chesterfield vs. Rochdale and Scunthorpe vs. Millwall both ended in goalless draws, while a goal a piece in the second half secured a point for both Oldham and Shrewsbury.
