Wigan Athletic are in talks to sign Crystal Palace’s veteran defender Paddy McCarthy on loan after a host of clubs failed to secure his services before the transfer window slammed shut just over a week ago.
The Irish defender was a regular fixture in the side that won promotion back to the Premier League back in 2012/13, but has since fell down the pecking order due to the emergence of several replacements, and the significant arrival of Alan Pardew. The 32-year-old had two loan spells last season with Sheffield United and Bolton Wanderers. He made 5 appearances in a Trotters shirt but the deal was cut short due to an injury he sustained in the 2-2 draw with Brentford.
Other than his 127 appearances in an Eagles shirt, McCarthy has plenty of other top flight experience with the likes of Leicester and Charlton. His leadership could be just what Gary Caldwell’s side are looking for as they aim to bounce back into the Championship at the first time of asking.
