Scout Report: Michael McGovern

Michael McGovern, a name that many of you may not have heard of prior to Euro 2016. Since Roy Carroll was displaced from the number one spot in a Northern Ireland shirt, McGovern has taken control. And made Championship and Premier chairman take notice with his performances over the last couple of weeks.

The Story so far

Nine years a Celtic player as a youngster, great things were expected of McGovern as a youngster. He was surrounded by big names in the green and white hoops, Henrik Larsson, Artur Boruc, Freddie Ljungberg and John Hartson just to name a few.

After the best part of a decade warming the bench, McGovern decided to make his escape from Celtic Park. Dundee United was his destination. He spent just one season at Tannadice, before again leaving in search of more first team opportunities.

McGovern found a home in Ross County, becoming a first choice goalkeeper for the first time aged 24. Seven years on, McGovern has recently been released by Hamilton Academical having made 82 appearances for the club. He will now look to further his career by making the hop across the border, with top flight clubs following his progress.

Who’s after him?

As I mentioned earlier, McGovern has been superb at Euro 2016. Upstaging household names such as Hugo Lloris and Manuel Neuer by making the ‘Team of the group stage’. Although an Accies stay is not off the table, with the likes of Rangers and Southampton among the clubs interested, he surely has to be tempted.

Matt Gilks recently put pen to paper on a contract at Ibrox, so that deal could be off the table. But whoever is installed as the next Saints boss, may look to pursue the clubs interest in Michael McGovern.

Sheffield Wednesday are rumoured to be the other side currently scouting the 31-year-old, but with Kieran Westwood excelling in the previous couple of seasons, I would see little reason to mix things up. So who do you think Michael McGovern should sign for? Let me know below!
