Charlton Athletic winger Johann Berg Gudmundsson has enjoyed an excellent tournament thus far. Although wide-play takes a back seat in Lars Lagerback’s Iceland set-up, Gudmundsson has provided width, that on occasions has been a much welcome change of tactics.
Name: Johann Berg Gudmundsson
Club: Charton Athletic
The Story so far
Its was recognized from an early age that Gudmundsson was to have a successful career in football. He was part of Chelsea and Fulham’s youth academies before making the step up to senior football.
After failing to make the impact that was expected in England, he made the treck back to his homeland, spending a season with Breidablik. His performances in the second third of the campaign would attract interest from the likes of Hamburg and AZ, with the latter capturing his signature.
The talented wide-man would stay out his five-year contract with the Dutch club, netting nine times before departing for another shot at English football. He would be a stand out performer in ‘The Addicks’ relegation season of 2015/16, sparking interest from Championship clubs.
Newly promoted Ligue 1 side Metz are said to be front-runners to obtain his services. But Gudmundsson has publically stated that he will make no further decisions on his future until after Euro 2016. A host of Championship clubs are also said to be monitoring his progress.
This is what Gudmundsson had to say about the speculation: “This is the first English club I’ve played for and it means a lot to me. To be relegated is obviously a disaster and something which I didn’t want for this club. This is a massive club which should be at least in the Championship so hopefully we can bounce straight back up.”
