Match Report: Posh vs Boston United

Peterborough United got their pre-season preparations off to an stalling start with a dull draw against Conference South Side Boston United. New manager Grant McCann opted to take two starting elevens to York Road, with each eleven playing 45 minutes of competitive football.

Returning to England off the back of their warm weather training camp in Portugal, many members of the first team squad appeared rusty in their opening outing of the season. Summer recruitments, Andrew Hughes, Ryan Tafazolli, Brad Inman and Hayden White, made their inaugural outings in the Voltage cherry away strip.

After dominating the opening exchanges, but failing to find a clear opening in front of goal, it would be new signing Ryan Tafazolli who opened the scoring. The former Mansfield man was renowned for his aerial ability during his time at the One Call Stadium. This looping header will surely be the first of many in a Posh shirt for the rising star.

With an hour played Boston found a much deserved equalizer. The men in yellow had showed signs of promise midway through the first half, and their efforts came to fruition when Lamin Colley stabbed home after a defensive mix-up.

Authoritative striker Colley proved to be a handful for the Posh rear-guard throughout the afternoon. Sublime hold up play from the Boston forward allowed Lewis Hilliard to have a crack, his shot whistling past the upright.

Following the leveller, The Pilgrims sat back and soaked up the Posh pressure. Jon Taylor frequently threatened down the left hand, but a ballooned shot was all he could muster. Before  Kevin Friend blew the final whistle, Shaquille Coulthirt would test the home goalkeeper, but ultimately could not find the winning goal.

It’s too early to say who will be involved against in the opening league fixture of the campaign against Rochdale on the 6th August, But the upcoming friendlies against Championship sides Norwich and Leeds, will test a talented bunch, and we may see whether they can once again challenge for promotion back to the second tier.

Full time score: Boston United 1-1 Peterborough United
