The ill-timed injury to Lee Angol has opened the door for Grant McCann to recruit a new man to lead the line. Morgan Ferrier is the latest man to be linked with the role after playing 60 minutes against Championship outfit Norwich City on Saturday.
The Story so far.
Experience at this level is extremely valuable, and this is something that Ferrier does not hold. A former Arsenal and Nottingham Forest youth player, the 21-year-old is yet to make inroads into the senior scene of professional football. Perhaps his biggest success in his short career thus far was at West Bromwich Albion. He was a regular starter in the under 21 side, but hitting goal-scoring form proved to be a problem.
He was scouted by McCann and his team just over a week ago while playing for last Monday’s opposition Boreham Wood. The speculation was that we had taken ex Everton striker Yakubu on trial, but in reality it was a much smaller name. At the tender age of 21, Ferrier has time on his side, and regular first team football could lead to a spurt in his development. With Posh’s history of drastically improving non-league frontmen, the newly appointed gaffer may choose to take the gamble.
What will he bring.
From the little evidence that has been thrown in front of us, he would offer a different dimension to our style. With Angol side-lined, possibly until Christmas, the physical presence is missing on the forward line. Aaron Williams would be an alternative, but he is yet to make an appearance in pre-season so far.
Ferrier managed a full hour in the 3-0 defeat to the Caneries. But looked exhausted after just half an hour. You cannot fault the youngsters work rate, but his fitness will be a point McCann would’ve earmarked in his list of priorities. With Paul Taylor putting pen to paper on a one-year contract earlier this week, for me it is a risk not worth taking. We have enough firepower in the squad, and I cannot see Ferrier claiming a starting eleven spot. I’m afraid the jury is out on this potential signing.
