Jelmer Munniksma, the man behind Autographs against cancer has dealt with his fair share of grief in his life. He supported his best friend while his mother suffered with the devastating disease. Jelmer put his road cycling career on hold to support two of the people that mattered in his life and with his care and considering they both emerged from the terrible time in their lives reletively unscaved.
To help put an end to this life destroying illness, Jelmer and his long time friend Wojciech Gurgul introduced ‘Autographs against Cancer’. The project was unveiled on the 20th February 2015 and has been growing ever since selling over 100 autographs. All the money raised is donated to Cancer Research UK. Jelmer told me: “We wanted to make a difference by supporting and donating money to Cancer Research UK, the money that they get from our donations will help them in their research towards curing cancer”.
At just 30-years-old, Jelmer has helped two close friends overcome this terrifying ordeal. He said, “We really want to help and support people who are fighting cancer in the UK. As this terrible disease has affected us all when it comes to family and friends”.
Despite putting a monumental into his project, Jelmer does get help from all over the world. “Just recently we received a very generous donation from Dave Prowse who played Darth Vader in the Star Wars movies, we emailed him a while ago so see if he would like to donate some of his autographs to us to raise some money. Thankfully he said yes!”
Along with fellow autograph collectors, Jelmer will be attending next year comic con in Amsterdam to add some more famous to the collection.
